Caribou
This caribou calf has just been born. It will learn to walk within an hour of birth and run within a few days.

Grizzly
Also known as "brown bears" grizzlies in the Arctic are so afraid of people they'll try to run away if they get a whiff of you. While they hunt caribou, much of their diet is berries, fish and even insects.

Semipalmated Plover
This brown-backed bird has a yellow bill and bright orange legs. He's only around 7" long, but travels all the way from the Arctic Refuge to South America, like his cousin, Migratory Max.

Wolf
Though this wolf is alone, wolf "families" are very important, helping to feed and raise the pups and keep the species going. Wolves can be grey, brown, black or even white.

Muskoxen
These shaggy beasts have been around since the ice age. Their fur is dark brown, their horns are the color of bleached bones. They have an undercoat of quiviat (KIH-vee-awt), softer and warmer than cashmere.

Polar bear
Polar bear
Polar bears make their winter homes, or "dens" on the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge. While polar bears appear to be white, their fur is actually translucent, transporting warm sunshine to their brown skin beneath.

Northern shoveler
This duck has a cinnamon-colored belly, a green head, a blue wing patch, and orange legs and feet. In the fall, it flies from the Arctic Refuge all the way to South America to spend the winter.
