Max's Grand Adventure: Heading Home
Max Raises a Family
Now home, Max finds a mate. He scrapes out a nest in the ground, then lines it with soft lichens for his mate, who soon lays four eggs. If predators, such as an arctic fox or a jaeger, come near the nest, Max will try to lure them away. Max will also help his mate keep the eggs warm for about 26 days. When the young hatch, they are as precocious as Max was, leaving the nest as soon as they're dry, learning to forage in the shadows of their parents.
In the fall, just as Max did two years ago, these little ones will begin their own Grand Adventure south. As they do, they'll continue the life cycle of many migratory birds, including the American golden-plover.
