  Max's Grand Adventure: Heading South

Lost At Sea?

Lost at Sea? From Hudson Bay, Max continues his journey eastward. Max and his friends arrive in Newfoundland, along the eastern coast of Canada. Max rests and feasts on crowberries and insects.

One evening, just at twilight, the golden-plovers gather together on the beach. Suddenly, without any apparent signal, the flock takes off over the Atlantic Ocean, flying up to 100 miles an hour. Now, the hardest part of Max's journey has begun. He will not stop now - not even to eat or sleep - until he reaches South America, some 3,000 miles away.

Below Max, as far as he can see, are the deep, vast waters of the Atlantic. Max notices humpback whales frolicking in the waters below. There are also dolphins and sea turtles. All of these animals migrate, too.

Max keeps up his frantic pace, flying as fast as he can. The sun rises and sets, then rises and sets again. And still, Max continues flying. Finally, after flying for 50 hours nonstop, Max spies land ahead.
