Max's Grand Adventure: Heading South
A Safe Place to Winter Max and his fellow golden-plovers have reached the small islands of the Lesser Antilles, just off the northern coast of South America. Max hurtles to the ground, exhausted. Having flown nonstop some 3,000 miles in two days, Max arrives in South America with his energy reserves completely spent. Luckily, the Antilles provide adequate food and shelter. Without this critical food for refueling, Max would not be able to continue his journey. He rests here briefly before continuing on to the pampas of Argentina. The pampas (grasslands) are the perfect place for Max to spend the winter. Warm and full of food, the pampas also offer the open vegetation Max needs to avoid Peregrine falcons. Max will remain here for the winter, then he'll stay through the summer and one more winter. By then, at nearly two years old, Max will be ready to return to his birthplace in the Arctic coastal plain and hatch some young of his own.
