Classroom Activities Getting smarter about how we use energy is the only way to begin to reverse the effects of global warming and continue to clean up our air. It is also a key way to protect fragile wild places, such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. As you'll learn from Arctic Adventure, the Refuge is a rare and remarkable place, with thousands of caribou, millions of birds, and wide-open wilderness. Because of the diversity of species that can be found in the Arctic Refuge, it is often called "America's Serengeti." Grade Levels Pre-K - 2nd grade | 3rd - 6th grade | 7th - high school Pre-K - 2nd grade All About Earth Day Coloring Book Picture Book - "What Are Me And You Gonna Do?" 3rd - 6th grade Max's Grand Adventure Planetary Heroes From Alaska to Our Backyards 7th - high school Arctic Journey From Alaska to our Backyards Environmental Timeline All About Earth Day (all ages) Print out and distribute, or read the history of Earth Day to your students. Students can send their own email message to the Senator, as well. GO Arctic Journey (6th - H.S.) One man's story of his 3 month-long journey in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Adventures with grizzlies, caribou, wolves, mosquitoes and camp cooking. The author, John Dunne, weaves an enchanting tale that includes some of the controversy about this magical place, how to prepare for such a journey, and personal reflection about life's important decisions. We think this journey will captivate the 6th grade to high school crowd, and give them plenty to consider on their own life journeys. Arctic Journey is online, or downloadable. 26 pages, with photos. Questions for students (2 pages) is designed to help students reflect on their own lives and their environment. GO Coloring Book Our downloadable coloring book focuses on animals that use the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Their habitat would be seriously compromised if oil development took place there. And, if oil were found, it's predicted to be in amounts that would fuel America's oil needs for just 90 days. Talk to your students about how choices they make affect the environment. If they choose to litter, they're not only making the environment unpleasant for humans, but they can affect animals who make their homes in a certain area. The animals pictured in the coloring book make their homes - at least part of the year - in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. It is a place where a decision will be made by grownups: To protect it as a wild place for the animals that live there, or develop it for oil to heat our homes and gasoline to run our cars - for a short period of time. GO Environmental Timeline (7th-H.S.) Follow the development of important conservation and environmental laws with this downloadable timeline. GO From Alaska to Our Backyards One teacher commented last year that there was enough here to keep her class busy for several days. Track the migrations of several different bird species from the Arctic Refuge in Alaska to places farther south. See if there are migration routes near your city, and consider where the best places to see these migrating animals might be. Plenty to do online, or use our downloadable fact sheets. Our teacher's packet includes a Refuge poster and flyway brochures on this very topic. GO Picture Book - What are Me and You Gonna Do? The stories and letters and pictures in this book were created by schoolchildren in 1970 for the very first Earth Day. As people have learned about the environment they've learned better ways to take care of it. But not all of our environmental problems have been solved, and we must all remember to take care of our environment. Have your students draw pictures or tell stories about what they can do to take care of their environment. Suggestions: throw trash away, recycle and encourage others to recycle. Save energy by turning off lights when you're not in the room, or by walking instead of riding in a car to places where it's safe to walk or bike. GO Planetary Heroes (5th - HS) Online and downloadable biographies of Rachel Carson, Gaylord Nelson, Mardy Murie, and a place to post the heroic activities of your own students or classrooms. GO |
